At that time, if you became sick and needed medical care, it was up to you to pay for it on your own. So when a health plan was introduced in 1929 to guarantee school teachers 21 days of hospital care for six dollars a year, the idea quickly gained nationwide attention. And people gained a new way to plan for their health care needs, their future, and their financial security.
In 1929, six dollars a year bought people peace of mind. Today, the skyrocketing price of hospital care, medical treatments and prescription drugs has dramatically altered that amount.

BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee History
In 1945, Chattanooga publisher Roy McDonald, alarmed at the increasing costs of hospital care and the inability of his employees and other citizens to pay, initiated a pre-payment plan for hospital bills. Acting on his social conscience to help those in need, McDonald founded the not-for-profit Tennessee Hospital Association - later to be called BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee.
Founded under the public welfare laws of the state, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee still remains a not-for-profit company, and has a long-standing commitment to provide outstanding service to the people who depend on our company.
BlueCross and BlueShield are the oldest and best-known brand names in the U.S. health care industry. The BlueCross BlueShield organization is a network of independent, locally operated companies called Plans. Each Plan is community-based and works closely with local hospitals and physicians to help ensure plan members and customer groups receive quality and affordable health care that meets their particular health and financial needs.
